Legacy Giving

Museum of Army Flying Legacy Giving

Why gifts in Wills matter

The Museum of Army Flying (MAF) tells the story of British Army Flying. Remembering the MAF in your Will, after you have provided for your loved ones, will enable the Museum to continue telling the story for future generations. Every gift, regardless of size, really does make a difference.

We understand that including a charity in your legacy is a big decision, and we hope that the following information will help.  If you have any further questions or would like to talk about anything further please contact chiefexecutive@flying-museum.org.uk.

How we can help you

We can:

  • Explain how a gift in a Will can help the MAF
  • Arrange for you to visit the MAF to explain its historical importance and our development plans
  • Describe the different ways you can leave money in a Will and explain the benefits
  • Explain how a gift to the MAF could help reduce the level of inheritance tax on your estate
  • Help you to find a solicitor

Different ways of giving

There are two main ways of leaving a gift:

Pecuniary gift - also known as a specific gift. A donation of a fixed amount. This is the simplest option.

Residuary gift - rather than gifting a fixed sum, you can choose to leave a proportion, or the whole of what is left in your estate once you have provided for your loved ones.   This can be a useful way of drafting the gift if you are unsure what proportion of your estate a fixed sum might represent in future years.

Making a residuary gift can also be a very useful tool for reducing the inheritance tax payable by your estate.  The gift itself will be free of inheritance tax in any event and, if you leave 10% of your estate to one or more charities, that mean that the rest of your estate will benefit from a reduction in the rate of inheritance tax payable on your estate from 40% to 36% .

If you have already made a Will

If you decide you would like to change your Will, in most cases you can do so by making a simple addition to your existing Will. This is called a codicil. This overwrites existing instructions without the need to revoke or rewrite the whole document. We have provided a draft codicil to simplify the process.

If you have not already made a Will

If you do not currently have a Will you may need to see a solicitor. Although you will have to pay a small fee, you will receive professional advice and can be sure that your wishes are honoured.

If you are an executor

The MAF will do our very best to help you with any questions you may have to do with being an executor. Please contact the Chief Executive chiefexecutive@flying-museum.org.uk.

Our Legacy Charter

Your legacy will undoubtedly help us keep the past alive, but we appreciate this is a personal decision, so our 8-point Charter below outlines our promises to you -

  • We understand and respect that when making a decision about your legacy your loved ones come first.
  • We recognise that this is a personal decision to be made in your own time.
  • We would be delighted to hear that you have remembered the MAF in your Will, but there is no obligation to tell us or inform us of any changes.
  • We respect your privacy but if you do wish to tell us you have planned to leave us a gift, we can keep in touch in a variety of ways which are most comfortable for you.
  • We will use your gift wisely and cost effectively.
  • We will administer your gift efficiently and with sensitivity and respect.
  • We promise to use your legacy to keep alive the story of the Army Air Corps.
  • We would like to keep you and your family up to date with the work and development we are doing at the Museum, but respect both yours and your family’s privacy.

Letting us know

If you would like to tell us you’ve chosen or are planning to leave the MAF a gift in your Will we would like to hear from you.  We will never ask you about the size of the gift but we would like to keep in contact with you about our news and events.

Please let us know if you have decided to:

  • remember the MAF in your Will
  • plan to remember the MAF in your Will
